Semantic Roles and Valency in Pidie Acehnese

Abstract

This article describes semantic roles and predicate valency in Pidie Acehnese, focusing on one-argument and two-argument constructions. The dataset comprises 35 Acehnese sentences documented in the underlying research. The reported data-collection techniques are semi-structured interviews with native speakers, translation elicitation from Indonesian into Acehnese, and participatory observation. The analysis follows Kreidler’s semantic-role framework and classifies each clause by argument number before interpreting the role of each argument in relation to predicate meaning. The examples show that one-argument predicates may encode actor, affected, or theme relations, while two-argument predicates include agent–affected, agent–effect, actor–place, affecting–affected, affected–affecting, and theme–associate configurations. The findings suggest that valency count alone does not determine semantic interpretation; role assignment depends on the lexical and relational meaning of the predicate. The article contributes a focused descriptive account of predicate–argument patterns in Pidie Acehnese. The dataset is limited to 35 examples, and the available materials do not specify participant numbers or an independent validation procedure; the findings should therefore be treated as preliminary and example-based.
