Abstract

The education at the Al-Azhar Islamic boarding school takes the form of education within formal school and education outside school (non-formal). Formal education takes the form of education in schools such as teaching and learning activities in class, memorizing the Qur'an and studying the yellow book. Meanwhile, out-of-school education takes the form of activities outside the Islamic boarding school, such as giving lectures at mosques around the Islamic boarding school, carrying out social service in the village such as mutual cooperation every week, and other religious activities in an effort to improve Islamic values. The aim of this research is to reveal how Kyai Syarifuddin's efforts in building the Al-Azhar Islamic Boarding School and at the same time contributing to improving Islamic values in Sukaramai Village, Batu Bara Regency. Apart from that, the research also aims to explain the supporting and inhibiting factors faced in this effort. Data was obtained through interviews and observation. After analyzing the results, it shows that Kyai Syarifuddin's efforts to build Islamic values in society, especially in Sukaramai village, are quite successful. Various learning activities in the Islamic boarding school environment and religious activities in the community are carried out so that it appears that there is an increase in these values which are manifested in the implementation of congregational prayers in mosques, fasting, increasing friendship between people and caring for each other and mutual cooperation. The obstacle experienced by Kyai Syarifuddin is the lack of facilities and infrastructure in the formal education process in the Islamic boarding school environment due to the minimal budget, however there are supporting factors, namely from the community and local government in every activity carried out.
