The Representation of Fatalistic Beliefs in Okky Madasari’s Novel Entrok

Abstract

This research examines the fatalism worldview represented in Entrok by Okky Madasari and explores how it shapes the characters’ attitudes, decision-making, and actions through Lucien Goldmann’s genetic structuralism. Using a qualitative descriptive method, the research analyzes quotations, dialogues, narratives, and descriptive passages that reflect fatalistic tendencies in the novel. The findings show that four aspects of fatalism appear in the story, namely predetermination, powerlessness, helplessness, and pessimism, with predetermination as the most dominant aspect. The analysis also reveals that fatalistic beliefs influence the characters in different ways: they affect their attitudes toward hardship and authority, guide their choices in difficult situations, and shape their responses to social pressures. Viewed through Goldmann’s perspective, these fatalistic patterns reflect the collective consciousness of a society shaped by poverty, patriarchal values, political pressure, and traditional beliefs. Overall, the research shows that fatalism in Entrok is not only an individual mindset but also a reflection of the social realities surrounding the characters.
