This journal was established and managed since Vol. 1, No. 1, September 2016 by the Program Studi Pendidikan Bahasa dan Sastra Indonesia FKIP UISU in print version. The online version of the journal began publication on Vol. 1, No. 2, March 2017. This journal publishes articles on themes related to the Indonesian language; literature; language education; Classroom Action Research; literature review; learning material and media development; and learning assessment. This journal is published twice a year (March and September).
In 2020, Sahri Nova Yoga (Managing Editor) has been done his duty. So, his position was replaced by Ratna Soraya and Rika Kartika (later was pointed as Chief Editor).
Early 2022, Bahastra has set up a new logo, a new header and its colours, a new template, and turned the OJS information into English. We consider that the journal has to renew and update the design for a fresh nuance, adhering to the open-access journal requirements, more detail and easier to user experience and etc.
In late February 2022, Bahastra has to submit an accreditation suggestion to Arjuna.
