1. Introduction
Taushiah: Jurnal Hukum, Pendidikan dan Kemasyarakatan recognizes the growing use of Artificial Intelligence (AI), including generative AI and AI-assisted technologies, in scholarly publishing. AI tools can support authors in improving language clarity, organizing content, and assisting technical tasks. However, their use must be carefully managed to uphold:
-
Academic integrity and originality.
-
Transparency and accountability.
-
Confidentiality in peer review.
-
Privacy, intellectual property, and other rights.
This policy applies to AI tool use by authors, reviewers, editors, and editorial staff throughout manuscript preparation, peer review, and editorial handling.
This policy aligns with widely adopted international publishing expectations and publication ethics guidance, including the need for human oversight, appropriate disclosure, and safeguards for confidentiality and intellectual property rights. AI tools must not replace human critical thinking and scholarly judgment.
2. Definition of AI Tools
For the purposes of this policy, AI tools refer to digital systems, platforms, or software that use artificial intelligence technologies, including machine learning, natural language processing, and deep learning, to generate, analyze, translate, summarize, or modify textual, numerical, visual, or audio data in scholarly contexts.
Examples include, but are not limited to:
-
Generative AI tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and other large language models (LLMs).
-
Writing and grammar tools such as Grammarly, DeepL Write, and QuillBot.
-
AI-assisted data analysis, coding, and visualization tools.
-
AI-assisted literature discovery and citation tools.
3. Acceptable Use of AI Tools by Authors
Authors may use AI tools provided that they maintain full responsibility for the manuscript's content and comply with the following requirements.
A. Permissible Uses Without Disclosure
Disclosure is not required for basic language assistance that does not alter the scholarly meaning of the manuscript, including:
-
Grammar, spelling, and punctuation correction.
-
Minor improvements to readability and language fluency.
-
Reference formatting and citation style adjustments.
B. Permissible Uses Requiring Disclosure
Authors must disclose AI assistance when tools are used beyond basic language editing, including:
-
Substantive rewriting, restructuring, or summarization of manuscript content.
-
Translation assistance beyond minor language polishing.
-
Coding, data cleaning, statistical analysis, or modeling, provided that all results are independently verified.
-
Literature mapping or idea generation, provided that all claims and references are verified against reliable original sources.
C. Restricted and Prohibited Uses
AI tools must not be used to:
-
Generate entire manuscripts or substantial original scholarly content in place of the authors' own intellectual contributions.
-
Fabricate, falsify, or manipulate research data, findings, images, or results.
-
Generate citations or references without verifying their existence and accuracy.
-
Reproduce or paraphrase published materials in ways that constitute plagiarism.
-
Produce content that infringes copyright or violates the intellectual property rights of others.
D. Images, Figures, and Artwork
The use of generative AI to create or manipulate research images and figures is prohibited when such alterations may misrepresent the original research data.
Basic adjustments to brightness, contrast, or color balance are permitted only when they do not obscure or eliminate original information.
When AI-assisted image generation or interpretation constitutes an essential component of the research methodology, its use must be clearly explained in the Methods section, including the tool name, version, provider, and procedures applied.
The use of AI-generated artwork or graphical abstracts requires prior editorial approval and compliance with applicable copyright and attribution requirements.
E. AI-Writing Detection
Taushiah may use AI-writing detection tools, including Turnitin, as part of its preliminary manuscript screening.
The maximum AI-writing detection indicator is 25%. Authors whose manuscripts exceed 20% may be required to review, clarify, and revise the relevant content.
AI-detection results are treated as preliminary indicators rather than definitive evidence of misconduct. Editorial decisions must be supported by human evaluation and consideration of the manuscript's scholarly integrity.
4. Responsibilities of Authors
Authors are fully responsible for all submitted content, including materials created or modified with AI assistance.
Authors must:
-
Verify the accuracy, originality, and reliability of AI-assisted content.
-
Ensure that manuscripts are free from plagiarism, fabricated references, misleading information, and research misconduct.
-
Properly acknowledge external sources, data, and copyrighted materials.
-
Maintain their own intellectual contributions, interpretations, and scholarly judgments.
-
Accept responsibility for errors, omissions, or ethical violations resulting from AI-assisted work.
5. Authorship and Artificial Intelligence
AI tools cannot be listed as authors or co-authors because they cannot assume responsibility for scholarly work, approve the final manuscript, or respond to questions concerning research integrity.
Authorship is reserved for individuals who meet the criteria established in Taushiah's Authorship and Contributorship Policy.
The inclusion of AI tools as authors or co-authors is prohibited and may result in editorial action.
6. Privacy, Confidentiality, and Intellectual Property
Authors must ensure that AI tools are used in accordance with applicable privacy, confidentiality, copyright, and intellectual property requirements.
Confidential research information, unpublished data, personal information, and protected materials must not be uploaded to third-party AI platforms without appropriate authorization and adequate safeguards.
7. Disclosure Requirements for Authors
Authors must disclose AI assistance when AI tools are used beyond basic grammar, spelling, punctuation, or minor language corrections.
The disclosure should include:
-
The name, version (where applicable), and provider of the AI tool.
-
The purpose and extent of AI assistance.
-
Confirmation that all AI-assisted outputs have been reviewed and verified by the authors.
AI assistance related to research methodology or data analysis should be described in the Methods section. Substantive writing assistance or translation should be disclosed in the Acknowledgements section or a separate declaration.
8. Responsibilities of Reviewers
Peer review must be conducted through independent human judgment while maintaining manuscript confidentiality.
Reviewers must:
-
Treat all manuscripts and review materials as confidential documents.
-
Not upload submitted manuscripts or any part of their content to generative AI platforms.
-
Not upload peer-review reports or confidential editorial correspondence into AI tools.
-
Not rely on generative AI to conduct scholarly assessments or generate review recommendations.
Reviewers remain fully responsible for the accuracy, objectivity, and integrity of their evaluations.
9. Responsibilities of Editors and Editorial Staff
Editors and editorial staff must maintain confidentiality, impartiality, and accountability throughout the editorial process.
Editors and editorial staff must:
-
Protect submitted manuscripts, editorial notes, and decision communications.
-
Not upload confidential manuscripts or editorial correspondence into generative AI platforms.
-
Not delegate manuscript evaluation or editorial decision-making to generative AI systems.
-
Ensure that editorial decisions are based on independent scholarly judgment and the journal's publication standards.
The Editor-in-Chief and editorial board retain full responsibility for all editorial decisions.
10. Editorial and Peer Review Oversight
Taushiah may employ similarity detection and AI-writing detection tools to support editorial screening and assess compliance with publication ethics.
However, automated detection results must not serve as the sole basis for determining misconduct or rejecting manuscripts. All concerns require appropriate editorial evaluation and, where necessary, clarification from the authors.
When inappropriate or undisclosed AI use is suspected, the journal may:
-
Request clarification, additional disclosures, supporting documentation, or manuscript revisions.
-
Reject manuscripts that violate the journal's publication ethics requirements.
-
Refer serious allegations to the authors' institutions or initiate further editorial investigation.
11. Consequences of Non-Compliance
Violations of this policy may result in appropriate editorial action, depending on the nature and severity of the misconduct, including:
-
Rejection of the manuscript during editorial screening or peer review.
-
Correction or retraction of published articles.
-
Notification to the authors' affiliated institutions in cases of serious ethical violations.
-
Restrictions on future submissions in cases of severe or repeated misconduct.
All actions will be considered in accordance with the journal's publication ethics and relevant guidance from the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE).
12. Appeals and Dispute Resolution
Authors who disagree with editorial decisions concerning AI tool usage may submit a formal written appeal to the Editor-in-Chief.
Appeals must include a clear explanation of the disagreement and relevant supporting evidence. The editorial team will evaluate the appeal fairly and determine an appropriate resolution based on the journal's ethical policies.
13. Policy Review and Updates
Taushiah: Jurnal Hukum, Pendidikan dan Kemasyarakatan recognizes that artificial intelligence technologies continue to evolve and may present new opportunities and challenges for scholarly publishing.
This policy may be periodically reviewed and updated to maintain consistency with developments in AI technology, research integrity, publication ethics, and internationally recognized scholarly publishing standards.
